Sim Family of Scotland History
John Henry Sim
I was born on July 16, 1935, at the Woman's Hospital, in the Kensington section of Philadelphia. My brother Bob and sister Jane and I grew up in a house our parents purchased, at 2525 E. Norris St. This was in the old Fishtown area of Kensington Section of Philadelphia. I have always been known as Jack.
The three of us attended Adair Elementary School and Penn Treaty Junior High School. I went on to Northeast Public High. I attended Drexel Institute of Tech. for a short period before joining the Army in January, 1955.
I took my basic training at Camp Gordon, Georgia and Engineering Training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. I was then transferred to the 62nd Engineer Bn. one of the permanent party companies at Ft. Wood.
While at Ft. Wood I met and married Betty Washburn. We had four children:
Helen Elizabeth, born
February ?, 1958, in St. Roberts, Missouri
I was discharge in July, 1958 after serving three years, six months in the service. My rank was SP5 (E-5).
After returning to Philadelphia I went to work for Gerber Baby Foods. In January, 1960 I decided to go full time to college. I had attended Villenova night school while working for Gerber, but transferred to Penn State University (at their Philadelphia campus). In 1960 we moved to Cape Girardeau, Missouri, where I attended Southeast Missouri State College (now University). I graduated in 1963 with a degree in Business Administration, majoring in Marketing. After graduating we moved to St. Louis, where I went to work for the Travelers Insurance Company in their Life, Health department. In late 1964, I resigned and became an agent for the Travelers selling insurance.
